Our story

The Gill family have been generational farmers from day one. Their philosophy is to find ways to regenerate and reuse water, energy and resources on the land. To not only work the land but to grow with it.

Billa Gill left India in the 1970s to pursue a better life. The first chapter of his journey began in the Middle East. He later moved to New Zealand where the rest of the Gill family were reunited.

In New Zealand, Billa was a man of many trades and skills, mostly self-taught - from taxi driving to running a cattle farm. In 2005, Billa left New Zealand to start a farming life in Australia. The first purchase he made was an almond property in Red Cliffs which covered 32 Acres (Billa had never actually seen an almond tree in his life, nor did he know how to farm it - but he was determined to learn!)

He saw his first season through the millennium drought which hit the farming industry hard and life suddenly became challenging. He was resourceful and inventive while weathering the seasons which brought both struggles and successful yields. Taking the wins when he could meant he always had a dream bigger than the last - resilience and willpower. This way of business rewarded him with the opportunities to buy additional surrounding farms in the local area. Which is now a tale of success behind the Gill family enterprise.

Today, Gill Farms and Gill Estate is a family-owned intertwined business that comprises 2,500 acres and employs 30 full-time team members. Together, Billa (Founder) and his sons Hardeep and Danny (Directors) farm almonds, citrus, avocados, mangoes, and of course the delicate and fruitful wine grapes.

During Vintage 2021, Gill Estate harvested and crushed four wine grape varieties; Pinot Grigio, Rosé, Tempranillo & Malbec which make up the very first Gill Estate wine labels ‘Rivah’. The team is fortunate enough to have the winery experience of Les Norris (Winery General Manager) who has been working on the estate grounds for over 30 years.

The Gill family and Gill Estate team hope that people can find time to sit back and savour a glass of Rivah wine, while remembering how magnificent the lifestyle we share in Australia is, in particular - our home on the Murray River.

'Growing with the land. Savouring our lifestyle’.
